Other Experiences

Participating in the Special Olympics World Games in Washington state while I was employed at Kaiser Permanente in both 2018 and 2019 marked an incredibly significant and transformative chapter in my life. During this prestigious event, Kaiser Permanente served as the medical sponsor, and I had the distinct honor of being in charge of documenting the doctors in action as they cared for the wounded athletes. This responsibility was my reported duty throughout the seven days of the Games, and it played a vital role in reshaping my perspective on both photography and life itself.

This experience went far beyond the boundaries of mere participation; it profoundly impacted me on multiple levels—mentally, physically, and even spiritually. While my primary role was to capture these moments through my lens, I found myself becoming an active participant in the celebration of the human spirit and the extraordinary achievements of these exceptional athletes. Witnessing their unwavering determination and the unwavering support of their families was nothing short of inspirational. The communal atmosphere at the Special Olympics radiated joy, unity, and boundless enthusiasm, creating a transformative environment that was both humbling and deeply moving.

Jesse Fudge, the head medical coordinator for the event, played a central role in orchestrating the medical team's efforts. I documented some great photos of her in action, showcasing her leadership and dedication, along with the incredible support from the entire medical team.

As I documented the athletes' triumphs and the doctors' compassionate care, freezing in time the emotions, dedication, and sheer joy that radiated from every athlete and their family members, I came to realize that photography was not merely about snapping pictures. It was about capturing the very essence of the human experience. This newfound perspective had a profound impact on my work, infusing it with a deeper sense of purpose and empathy.

The Special Olympics experience served as a catalyst for personal growth and reflection. It reminded me of the immense power of community and the extraordinary ability of individuals to uplift one another. It reinforced my belief in the transformative potential of human connections and the profound significance of celebrating every person's unique abilities and achievements.

As I look forward to future opportunities to be a part of such a meaningful event once again, the Special Olympics has evolved from being a photographic subject to a constant source of inspiration. It serves as a reminder of the boundless beauty of the human spirit and our shared humanity. I remain deeply committed to continuing to document these moments of triumph, not only as a photographer but also as a passionate advocate for inclusivity, empowerment, and the enduring celebration of the human experience.
